NO SCALE FAIL Cotto and Canelo Make Weight
The first heavy wave of pins and needles and, yuck, bad drama, can come with the weigh-in.
Scales fails are always buzzkills, cast a pall on a big fight, and we always hope that combatants don’t swing and miss on their most baseline task as a professional pugilist: make the contracted weight.
Sigh of relief time…
Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez, vying Saturday night for personal supremacy and the RING middleweight title, were 153.5 and 155 pounds respectively when they were weighed Friday afternoon at Mandalay Bay, where their tangle will unfold.
For those who don’t know, neither man fancies themself a true middleweight, thus they agreed upon a “catch-weight” of 155 pounds or less.
Will he come out hard to start, so we don’t get another #MayPac, asked Col. Bob Sheridan? Cotto said he just wants to win, and didn’t promise a war. Canelo said he loved seeing a packed weigh in, and promised a “great fight” tomorrow. How will he win? Canelo said that he prepared to win, knows it will be a tough task, but will prevail.
You can watch on site or on HBO PPV.
Speaking of fails, Randy Caballero did, mightily; he was supposed to defend his IBF bantam crown, but was 123.5, not near the 118 pound limit. Foe Lee Haskins was 117.5, so he can win the crown, which is stripped from Caballero.
