Omar Choudri Counting Down To Debut
After homing in on his pro debut for nearly six months, tough 30-year-old Brooklynite Omar Choudri looks to prove that age is just a number in the ring as he gets set for a late pro start against the gritty Albany, NY native Donyell Dukes.
Being involved in a number of gym-wars as a sparring partner for the very best including Peter Quillin, Will Rosinsky, and Marcus Browne, Choudri's boxing notoriety peaked far before he got the proper tools and guidance to fabricate a lasting career. Now, with many behind him (and many doubting him), Choudri plans to act on the words he muttered as a barely-teenaged boy after watching Muhammad Ali light the torch at the '96 Atlanta Olympics — “I'm going to be a champion”.
In an interview with ESPN New York Boxing writer Michael Woods, Choudri proudly stated, “If Bernard Hopkins can do it at 48, if Sergio Martinez can do it at 38 … I've seen guys better than Floyd Mayweather in gyms, but they didn't make it, and they won't do better than me, because they don't have my heart,” he says. “Not even God can go against you if you're determined enough.”
Just as the winless Donnie Dukes isn't Sergio Martinez, Omar Choudri, fortunately, isn't 48-years-old like Bernard Hopkins — where 1/1,000 fighters don't even triumph to half the extent of Hopkins. One must sense at 30-years-old the window is already closing, but common estimates fall short commonly enough, while dedication, devotion, as well as a split-second wake up call or two can make all the difference.
His first fight is signed and sealed for the 5 Star Banquet Hall in Long Island City, Queens, New York on November 15th. Only about two weeks shy of the fight, training camp hours are increasing and the work load is getting harder. More work here, less work in the ring is the method of choice.
Tickets are still available for this fight card, presented by Uprising Promotions. In the main event, Greek-American Female Heavyweight Sonya Lamonakis goes against Gwendolyn O'Neil in an eight-round scrap.
