RED HOT ACTION: Canelo Steamrolls Kirkland in PPV Worthy Scrap
Canelo Alvarez impressed mightily in the main event which took place in Houston on Saturday night, and gave fight fans still grogged out from the May 2 slumber-fest a wake up call. He went at James Kirkland, sent him down in the first, and twice in the third. The ref waved off the contest when a filthy right spun Kirkland down, and kept him there for a long spell.
Golden Boy promoted the card, with an assist from 50 Cent.
Canelo went 87-150, to 42-197 for the loser.
The Mexican Alvarez, age 24, coming off a SD12 win over Erislandy Lara, was 44-1-1, while the 31-year-old Texan Kirkland was 32-1. His last fight came in December, and he beat Glen Tapia (TKO6).
In the first, Canelo caught Kirkland a few times. A right sent down Kirkland, with 1:15 left. A left body shot and a straight right was the damager…
In the second, Kirkland stayed up, somehow. He leaned in, tried to throw, to answer. He had nothing on his shots. Canelo took some time off in the round. “He’s wearing down,” the corner told Kirkland. Also, don’t square up…We saw a left uppercut on replay from the Mexican.
In the third, Kirkland came forward, in the face of the Mexican. A right upper knocked Kirk to the mat. A right thenspun him round and down. Game over. Kirkland was on his back, and not threatening to stand up.
The fight was brief, and savage, and enjoyable…
