Rigondeaux and Manager Hyde Part Ways

The Rigo-lution has ended.

Or more appropriately, phase 1 of the plan has come to a close.

Rigondeaux’ long time manager Gary Hyde has confirmed to TSS that the management agreement he had with the 34-year-old Cuban great is over.

Hyde, who struck up a friendship with Rigondeaux at the world amateur championships in Belfast back in 2001, and signed a management agreement with Rigo in Cuba in 2007.

Rigondeaux, who sports a 15-0 record, and last gloved up in December 2014, signed a three year extension on September 15, 2012. The fighter, promoted by Caribe, has had offers presented to him since he last tangled, but for whatever reason, they were not embraced.

On Wednesday, a Top Rank rep said he was offered a fight against Vasyl Lomachenko, but his ask was so high, that proposal went nowhere.

“It was a great honor to represent one of the best fighters in the world since he turned pro,” said Hyde. “It has been a roller coaster relationship wish a lot of people whispering in the kid’s ear. I wish Rigo continuing success and I hope the world will finally appreciate his sublime skills.”

Sublime to one is less than that to another. Rigo is for sure a master ring general, but the Mayweather side of him, which seeks to not get hit, primarily, and then adds offense as element 2, has made him not the easiest sell to TV. Mayweather is the exception, not the norm, in terms of having his superlative sweetly scientifc skills fully lauded. I dare say whatever shoe drops next, we can expect more in-ring outings from Rigo, more frequently. It has been rumored for a long spell now that the fighter, who celebrates a birthday Sept. 30, would be latching on with uber advisor Al Haymon. We shall see if that comes to fruition…
