Roach Won’t Bite When Asked About Triple G Weight For Cotto Fight
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, trainer Freddie Roach said when asked about a Miguel Cotto vs. Gennady Golovkin fight.
How low do you want Golovkin to go, Roach was asked at BB Kings, at a presser to hype the Saturday Cotto vs. Daniel Geale middleweight tangle at Barclays Center.
“We haven’t negotiatied with him, I have no idea yet,” said Roach, a wince-y look on his face, and it was unclear if it was due to his disc problem in his back which might need surgery, or the marvelously candid interviewing style belonging to Tha Boxing Voices’ Nes.
“We’ve never thought about the fight yet,” “Dedham” Freddie said. “Triple G still doesn’t bring nothin to the table. He still doesn’t sell any pay per views, it’s fighting a tough guy for no money.”
Was the disc bulging or was it Nes, lol, when Nes asked Roach about dictating terms to Canelo, when Canelo was instrumental in selling 2.2 PPVs when he hooked up with Mayweather?
“We didn’t say he didn’t sell tickets, we said Golovkin didn’t sell tickets,” Roach said, stating that it would be decided what terms might be sought when the time comes to negotiate, not before.
Actually, “Golovkin’s a good fighter, he’s a good guy, I like the guy, you might say we’re friends,” Freddie said; but, he noted, Manny Pacquiao didn’t know he was when he walked by him. “He needs more exposure in America,” the trainer said.
Bottom line, Canelo brings more to the table, so it’s a no brainer, now, on what to do next, if it’s between the Mexican and Triple G.
