Ruslan Provodnikov and Chris Martin Score KOs in Corona

CORONA, CALIF.-Los Angeles based Ruslan Provodnikov blasted out Riverside's Jose “El Nino” Reynoso quickly and San Diego's Chris Martin knocked out Mexico's Roberto “Azabache” Castaneda on Friday night.

A large crowd at the outdoor arena Omega Products International saw Provodnikov win a WBO International junior welterweight title with some heavy punches. ESPN televised the event held under near perfect conditions.

Big punching Provodnikov (22-1, 15 KOs) was swinging and missing the first round against the quirky southpaw style of Reynoso (16-3-1, 3 KOs). But that was in the first round as Reynoso moved and countered effectively.

Round two was a different story as Provodnikov attacked the body to move closer and then came the right hand bombs…a lot of them. The final blow seemed to re-arrange Reynoso's nose as he went down holding his face. Referee Raul Caiz Jr. counted out the Riverside boxer at 1:53 of round two for a knockout win for Provodnikov.

Lopez was probably sent to the hospital and looked fine but his nose looked far different then when he entered the ring.

“This is a payoff for a long three month training camp. I spent the first two months with Manny Pacquiao,” said Provodnikov after.

“The priority was to work the body and finish on top. The outcome was because of the work with Manny as he moved a lot and it improved my footwork”

San Diego's Chris Martin (24-2-3, 7 KOs) let the fight flow in the direction Mexicali's Roberto “Azabache” Castaneda (19-2-1, 14 KOs) wanted to take it. After figuring out his movements and weaknesses Martin found the body was open and attacked it. A Martin left hook to the liver in round five caused Castaneda to collapse and take a a count. He survived but looked still hurt from the blow. In the beginning of round six Martin attacked the head and eventually found an opening for another left hook to the body. This time Castaneda signaled to referee Jerry Cantu he had enough at 2:31 of round six for a knockout win for Martin.

Lissette Medel (7-1-1) won by unanimous decision over Las Vegas's Tatina Anderson (5-2-1, 4 KOs) after six rounds of a junior lightweight contest. It was a rematch of a fight held last year that ended in a draw. This time Medel used quick combinations to get off before Anderson and the plan proved effective. A clash of heads in the third round caused a slight cut on the side of Medel's right eye but not bad enough to cause a problem. Anderson began finding the range for her punches in the last three rounds and landed some good blows to the body. But Medel's three-punch combinations seemed to score at will and convinced the judges.

Coachella's Angel Osuna (8-3-1, 4 KOs) won by unanimous decision over Escondido's Dashon “Flyboy” Johnson (13-6-3, 4 KOs) after six rounds of a junior middleweight match. Osuna was busier throughout the night against Johnson who didn't seem to be on his usual aggressive manner. All three judges scored it 60-54 for Osuna.

Riverside's Aaron Acevedo (1-0-1) and San Bernardino's Daniel Martinez (0-0-1) fought to a majority draw after four rounds of a junior lightweight contest.

Northern California's Oscar Godoy (7-2, 3 KOs) proved more effective against Riverside's Roberto “Puerto Rican Prince” Crespo (4-2) in a junior middleweight fight. All three judges scored it for Godoy 40-36 twice and 39-37. There were no knockdowns.
