Ten-Count for Boxing Writer Jack Welsh
Las Vegas, NV ( April 25, 2005) – Jack Welsh, an award-winning fight writer who has been at ringside at major Las Vegas boxing events since the early 1980s, has passed away. Welsh, believed to be in his early 80s, was found in his apartment here late Monday afternoon.
Welsh covered boxing for many publications, including the Philadelphia Journal daily newspaper where he was the chief fight writer from 1978 to 1979. He then moved to Las Vegas where he was a correspondent for The Ring magazine and who also wrote a weekly boxing column packed with the latest fight news in Gaming Today, Las Vegas, for over 10 years.
For many years, Welsh was the late-night boxing expert on Lee Pete's nightly radio sports talk on KDWN 720 AM, the Voice of the West, from the Frontier Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas.
Welsh covered pro and college football for a variety of publications and also covered the gaming business in Las Vegas.
However, he loved big-time boxing the most and was at ringside at the biggest Las Vegas fights of our time including Hagler vs. Leonard, Hagler vs. Hearns, Tyson vs. Holyfield, De La Hoya vs. Trinidad and Morales vs. Barrera.
At the same time, he was at ringside for practically all club shows in the city.
Welsh was a long-time member of the Boxing Writers Association of America.
He was at ringside for the Antonio Margarito vs. Kermit Cintron main event this past Saturday night outdoors at Caesars Palace. Welsh was in the press room that evening, speaking to his friends before he walked to ringside to cover the event.
Funeral arrangements will soon be announced.
