Toney Beaten Soundly By Lebedev…WOODS
The time has come for James Toney to call it a day. Whether he will is another matter entirely. Now 43, Toney, who many moons ago was one of the pound for pound best boxers on this or any planet, was never in it against Russian Dennis Lebedev in Moscow on Friday.
The fight could have been stopped many times along the way but sadly for the loser Toney, it went the 12 round distance.
Toney did well to make cruiserweight, considering he gets up to around 280 pounds. Against Damon Reed in February, he was 257 pounds, and was 199 at the Thursday weigh in. But his legs, his energy, any hint of the form which made him a pound for pounder, were absent against the 23-1 Lebedev, who rubbed out Roy Jones in his last outing.
The scores in what we hope is Toney's last match as a pro were 120-108, 120-108, and 120-107. Toney, who debuted in 1988, drops to 73-7-3.
