UK Boxing News: Froch Has Surgery to Repair Knuckle
British and Commonwealth super middleweight champion Carl Froch will have an enforced two-month break from gym duties having gone under the knife to repair a damaged knuckle on his right hand earlier this week.
The Nottingham boxing hero suffered the injury – a ruptured extensor hood – in April this year against Henry Porras in Hollywood when he coasted to an eighth round stoppage win.
“I busted it in the fourth against Porras. I felt it go, so I eased off a bit in case I did further damage,” said the Cobra, who was treated successfully by one of Britain’s leading hand specialists.
“The injury meant I could have postponed my subsequent British and Commonwealth title defence against Matthew Barney earlier this month, but unlike some boxers I don’t look for reasons not to fight. Anyway I knew I could beat Barney with one hand if need be.”
The injury, once repaired, has virtually no history of repetition and will have no impact on the career of one of the hottest properties in World boxing.
“I fitted the surgery round my fights,” explained WBC #13 Froch. “I was due a little breather anyway.”
“Throughout this break I will maintain my general fitness levels. Then I will be looking to get back to sparring in eight weeks.”
“I am hoping to fight sometime in November in Nottingham, either in a defence of my British or Commonwealth titles or in an eliminator for the European.”
