Upsets at Thompson Boxing Show in Ontario
A couple of upsets made some eyes perk but in the main event Danny Roman took care of business on Friday night.
The usual boxing crazy crowd saw Roman (15-2-1, 5 Kos) win by unanimous decision over Christopher Martin (28-6-3, 9 Kos). All three judges scored it 80-71. A knockdown of Martin by Roman was the clincher in their super bantamweight clash.
At one time Martin was a contender, but has since dropped three of his last four fights. Looks like Roman moves up the ladder in the super bantamweight division.
Salt Lake City’s Jose Haro (9-1-1) upset former super bantamweight contender Efrain Esquivias (17-4-1) in their eight round featherweight co-main event. Esquivias, who was a former contender, was unable to convince judges he was the superior fighter. In his last six fights he has won once and fought to a draw. The rest were losses. The only win came against Mexico’s former great Rafael Marquez by knockout.
In another upset, Mexico’s Roberto Castaneda (22-9-1, 15 Kos) defeated Riverside’s Juan Reyes (12-2-3) by majority decision after a six round super bantamweight bout. Castaneda had lost eight of his last nine fights and was able to out-score the always busy Reyes.
Former Venezuelan Olympian Cesar Villarraga (7-0, 4 Kos) defeated Erick Aguirre (6-8-1) by unanimous decision after six rounds in their lightweight encounter. Thompson Boxing Promotions is banking that he could be one of their next big finds. They have a very good track record.
Rigoberto Flores (7-1 defeated Luis Hernandez (0-2) by unanimous decision in a four round bout held in the lightweight division.
