Roach on Pacquiao-Danny Garcia: “I Love That Fight”
The Bob Arum top trial balloon sent up for Manny Pacquiao’s possible next, if he beats ChrisAlgieri, or beats him by a slim margin and a rematch is called for, or Pacman fights Floyd Mayweather, or Juan Manuel Marquez comes back to the table, or something else pops up, is Danny Garcia.
The potential pairing of the Philly based 140 pound champ of Puerto Rican descent against the Fighting Congressman gets a thumbs up from pretty much any fan I talk to, and Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter, said he’d be talking to Arum next week about hashing out the outlines of a deal.
With Garcia in the mix, prominently, I took the opportunity to ask “Dedham” Freddie Roach what he thinks about a Pacquiao-Danny Garcia face-off.
“I love that fight,” the 52-year-old trainer told me. “That was my number one choice. He’s a good opponent, he’s a tough guy, he comes to fight, his dad talks a lot of s–t, I can talk a lot of s–t, we’ll get it on. Garcia comes to fight and I learned that when he fought Amir Khan, Amir stayed in the pocket too long, he got caught, the guy swings for the fences all night long, he’s dangerous all night long.”
Freddie cracked up when I suggested we’ll have to have a partition in between him and ever combustible Angel Garcia. “He’s tested me before, and then after the (Garcia-Khan fight), because we both know what he’s up to, and I’m up to, (we were cool). We’re just making the fight more interesting, and selling a couple tickets, maybe.”
Yep, Freddie days of fury are mostly behind him. Cept that time in Kinkos. A civilian effed with him, and boom went the Dedham dynamite. He dropped the dude…who then countered with a lawyer letter…after he got the smelling salts treatment, and the tweety birds over his head went back to their cage. “I got arrested, and I paid the guy ten thousand dollars. That was about five years ago,” he recalled.
I smell a Kinkos endorsement deal for Roach! Not.
