WBC Legends of Boxing Museum Inductions 2013

Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto and Riverside’s Mikey Garcia headline a number of boxing celebrities appearing at the WBC Legends of Boxing Museum induction ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 22.

A number of current and past boxers, trainers and managers will be inducted into the WBC Legends of Boxing Museum at Oceana restaurant in Pomona. Festivities begin with a meet and greet at noon. The luncheon begins at 1:30 p.m.

Cotto, who is scheduled to fight Delvin Rodriguez on Oct. 5 in Orlando, has been training with Freddie Roach at Wild Card Boxing gym in Hollywood.

“He recently consented that he would be attending,” said Jaime Ochoa, WBC Legends of Boxing Museum spokesman. “Mikey Garcia, the champion, is also planning to attend.”

Along with Mikey Garcia will be his brother Robert and father Eduardo Garcia, who has been one of the great boxing trainers of the past 30 years. Few are aware but he has been responsible for both of his son’s world titles and the great Fernando “El Feroz” Vargas. He seldom gets credited for his accomplishments in the boxing ring. Currently Eduardo Garcia is shaping the career of Riverside’s Saul Rodriguez, a super-hot prospect.

Others being honored on Sunday will be Jill Diamond, Rudy Tellez, Dan Goossen, Tom Brown, Bill Young, Linda Young, Frank Espinoza, Dr. Joe Vivo, Duane Ford, Ruben Castillo, Joey Olivo, Dr. Alfred Almada and Carol Steindler.

In the Posthumous category: Dick Young, Emanuel Steward, Hector Camacho, Alexis Arguello, Ernie “Indian Red” Lopez, Eddie Futch, Hector Lopez, Cleto Reyes, Julio Gonzalez and Howie Steindler will be inducted.

If you saw the name Steindler twice it’s no accident. Carol Steindler is the daughter of Howie Steindler, who both owned the famous Main Street Gym in downtown Los Angeles. A film documentary on the life of Carol Steindler is being made and part of the festivities will be filmed as part of the film.

The famed gym was closed down in following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake after failing to pass building requirements. It was located on 2^nd Street and Main and has been torn down.
