Groves Stops Cox – London’s Wembley Arena hosted George Groves vs Jamie Cox on Saturday, the third World Boxing Super Series 168-pound tournament quarterfinal.
A packed Wembley Arena greeted both men as they entered the ring to an impressive light show. Cox came out putting serious pressure on Groves, who stayed calm under fire and fired back. Cox, shorter and stockier, seemed up to the task as he constantly crowded Groves along the ropes. Groves settled into counterpunching and fighting a savvy fight and he landed an electrifying body punch in the fourth round that saw Cox hit the canvas and take the full ten count to end the fight.
Groves advances in the World Boxing Super Series tournament while successfully defending his WBA world title. Groves was the number 1 seed heading into the tournament and he now appears to be heading for an all-British showdown with Chris Eubank Jr in January. Eubank Jr advanced last week with a third round stoppage of Avni Yildirim.
Denmark’s Patrick Nielsen was invited as the WBSS tournament alternate and he faced British veteran John Ryder in a 10-round bout. Ryder was looking to make the most of the opportunity and he did, as he was the stronger and more skilled boxer from the start. Nielsen hit the canvas in round 2 and though he attempted to rally in the ensuing rounds he never found his legs. As the fifth round came to an end Ryder landed a terrific three fight combo that sent Nielsen down for the count.
Sauerland events produced a huge 13 fight boxing card. The feature bout results appear below.
