Weight No Worry: Williams Blasts Out Quintana

Long, Tall Paul is back. Paul Williams was embarrassed back in February, when Carlos Quintana schooled him, and took away his WBO 147 pound strap. Everyone and their brother said Williams was weak from making weight. He said his rhythm was off. Well, his weight was spot on, and his rhythm was back on track as he tore through Quintana with vicious efficiency in the opening bout on the Showtime broadcast taking place at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Williams wasn’t sporting a bad-luck Mohawk he wore in the first bout, and maybe that was the problem in February. He blasted out Quintana with sharp lefts and some right hooks to boot, and finished off the slick technician in the first.

The South Carolinian Williams weighed in at 145 3/4 pounds, and came in with a 33-1 record, while the WBO champ Quintana (25-1 entering), weighed 146 pounds. The two met on Feb. 9, and the Puerto Rican Quintana shocked the majority of experts and fans as he outboxed Long Tall Paul, who was listless and clueless, enroute to a unanimous decision.

In the first, the two lefties got down to business, with Q showing his long left was still tough. But Williams came roaring back and dropped Q; a short left to the chin rung his bell, and Williams followed up, voraciously. Q got up, but not for long. Williams’ left hand hit home, several times, and the ref stepped in and halted the affair to save Q from complete unconsciousness, as he was dropping to his knees.
