Wilder Injures Right Arm In Arreola Win

Wilder Injures Right Arm – WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder moved his record to 37-0 with 36 KO’s as he successfully defended his belt Saturday night against Chris Arreola at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Wilder was comfortably ahead on the judges cards when Arreola’s corner refused to send their fighter out for round nine.

Shortly after the fight, Wilder was on his way to a nearby hospital. Dr. David Williams, one of the attending physicians at ringside, stated that Wilder had a broken hand and a detached or torn bicep, both on his right arm. Wilder did not show any overt signs of being injured, and the FOX announcing team did not seem to notice Wilder favoring his right arm during the fight, so at this time it is unclear exactly when the injury occurred.

The news is a setback for Wilder, who has stated that he is looking to unify all the heavyweight belts and wants fights with Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko. Unfortunately for Wilder, his next fight will have to wait until his right hand and arm are healed.

Wilder was making the fourth title defense of the WBC belt he won in January of 2015 when he defeated Bermaine Stiverne.  Reports are that Wilder took home $1.4 million dollars for this fight, while Arreola took home a paltry $150,000. Wilder had a May of 2016 fight with Alexander Povetkin in Russia fall apart after the Russian challenger failed a pre-fight medical exam, and this fight with Arreola came together on short notice for all parties. Arreola falls to 36-5-1 overall.
