Woods Puts Kovalev on the Spot: “Will You Change Diapers?”
Sergey Kovalev possesses that duality of being which can be so arresting in a fighter. He has this charming and amiable side, big ole dimples when he breaks into a frequent grin…and he also owns an assassin’s heart when it comes to being ready to remove a foe from his senses.
It remains to be seen whether we shall see the cold-hearted senses-taker on Saturday, in AC, and on HBO, if he manages to do the near impossible, and render Bernard Hopkins fuzzy. But that amiable side, I saw it during a Tuesday media workout at Gleason’s in Brooklyn.
Truth be told, I nudged him in that direction, when I asked him (as seen above, in David Spagnolo photo) about the new addition to his family. Baby boy Alexander Kovalev was born to wife Nataly on Oct. 20, and the fighter said he’s very much looking forward to getting close to the newborn, whom he has not yet seen in the flesh.
“Sergey, are you looking forward to changing diapers?” I asked the 25-0 (23 Kos) hitter, who now lives in Cali.
“Diapers, who is it?” he said, confused. He look to manager Egis Klimas for direction, and then it clicked into gear.
“It’s easy,” he said, breaking into a massive grin. “Sure, it’s my son. Why not? I can change any baby, but it’s my son, I can do it one hundred percent, every day.”
Man just won himself a parcel of female rooters, heck, anyone with a baby, or who thought all boxers are old-schoolers resistant to progressivism in gender roles, with that statement, may I dare say…
