Tonight’s Zona Box Event at the WBO Convention

This evening, G&V Entertainment and PR Best Boxing are co-promoting a show at the Centro de Convenciones Vasco Núñez de Balboa (The Panama Hotel) in Panama City, Panama. The fights are scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm.
Francisco Fonseca (22-1-1, 16 KOs) and Yohan Vasquez (21-2, 18 KOs) will be facing off in the main event. Fonseca, from San Ramón, Costa Rica will be defending his WBO Latino Super Featherweight title against Vásquez, from the Dominican Republic. Both fighters made weight yesterday, with Fonseca weighing in at 129.75 pounds and Vásquez at 128.5 pounds.
Five additional bouts were originally scheduled on the card, but unfortunately one fell through. Jeyvier “Perrito” Cintron (8-0, 4 KOs) was scheduled to fight Ricardo “El Matematico” Núñez (29-8, 23 KOs), but Nunez was forced to pull out due to a hand injury. Then, they were in negotiations with Jonathan “El Agua” Arias (17-14-0, 15 KOs) as a replacement opponent, but were unable to come to terms, resulting in a cancellation of the bout.
Featherweights Jean Carlos “Chapito” Rivera (15-0, 10 KOs) and Jason “El Alacrancito” Sánchez (12-0, 6 KOs) will be battling for the vacant WBO World Youth Featherweight belt. Rivera (Puerto Rico) weighed in at 125.75 lbs., but Sánchez (New Mexico) came in two and half pounds overweight; therefore, only Rivera has an opportunity to claim the title tonight.
Yenifel Vicente (33-3-2, 25 KOs) is matched against Victor Proa (29-5-2, 22 KOs) for the WBO Latino Super Bantamweight belt. Both fighters made weight, with Vicente (Dominican Republic) at 121.5 lbs and Proa (Mexico) at 121 lbs.
Agustín “El Avión” Guato (9-0, 5 KOs) and Jose Antonio Jimenez (20-9-1, 9 KOs) will be fighting for the vacant WBO Latino Junior Flyweight belt. Guato, out of Argentina, weighed in at 107 pounds and Jimenez, from Columbia, weighed in at 108 pounds.
Two young, local Panamanian fighters are scheduled for a 6 round bout. Eliecer Tenorio (2-2, 1 KO) of 24 de Diceimbre will take on Jose Beitia (4-1-1, 4 KOs) of David. Tenorio made weight yesterday at 133 lbs and Beitia at 133.5 lbs.
The card coincides with the WBO’s 31st Convention, which began Sunday, Oct 29 with a golf tournament. Activities scheduled for the week include a general assembly, judges and referee seminars, and a meeting of the championship and ratings committee. The convention concludes with a formal dinner gala on Thursday, November 1st.
