Enrique Ornelas KOs Julius Fogle In L.A.

LOS ANGELES-Enrique Ornelas overcame a sleepy start to send Julius Fogle to sleep in a light heavyweight fight at Club Nokia on Thursday in front of 1,765 fans on a Golden Boy Promotions fight card.

Power 106’s Tattoo of the nations top hip hop radio show emceed the local boxing card with the same punch that Ornelas would later land. It’s a week before the big fight in Las Vegas and all focused seemed to be on that clash between Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather.

A slow first round saw neither Ornelas or Fogle unleashing many punches as both took their time learning each other’s moves.

The slow developing fight finally ended abruptly with a left uppercut that dropped Fogle (15-4, 10 KOs) for the count of 10 in the fourth round.

“I gave him a little bit of confidence because I knew he had longer arms than me so I gave him time to get inside,” said Ornelas (30-6, 20 KOs). ““Every time I would feint he would move and it landed.”

The win gives Ornelas momentum to head toward another title bid but in the light heavyweight division.

“I’ll fight whoever wants to fight,” said Ornelas whose last title bid came against Bernard Hopkins.

Former contender participant Deon Elam (11-1, 5 KOs) floored Philadelphia’s Andre Hemphiill (8-15-2) with a six-punch combination in the fourth round. The fighters began taking off their gloves because the CSAC officials had mistakenly informed the fighters it was a four round fight instead of six. The judges scored the fight for L.A.’s Elam 40-35 twice and 39-36.

“We signed a contract for six rounds,” said Elam after the fight. “but I’m happy with the victory…I can’t cry about the win.”

Elam said he is scheduled to fight May 6 in Hollywood and May 27 in San Diego.

The Van Nuys based fighter said his experience in the Contender reality TV show against cruiserweights from around the world gave him confidence.

“There were really no guys to just walk over. As long as I listen I can move along with cruiserweight ranks and maybe even to heavyweight,” Elam said.

Russian bantamweight Khabir Suleymanov (10-0, 4 KOs) kept his unbeaten streak against Mexico’s Benjie Garcia (14-14-3) by unanimous decision after six rounds to win 60-54 and 59-55 twice.

Los Angeles based fighter Luis Martinez (2-3-1) took a unanimous decision over San Bernardino’s Juan Sandoval (1-2) in a four round junior lightweight bout. The judges scored it 40-36 twice and 38-38.

Mixed martial arts fighter Hiromitsu Miura (2-0) of Japan is trying out boxing and won his second pro fight by decision against Tennessee tough Nathan Bedwell (0-2) after four rounds of a light heavyweight bout. The judges scored it 40-36 and 39-37 twice for Miura who recently fought for Dana White’s WEC organization. Though Bedwell landed often it was Miura’s power shots that proved the difference.

Lancaster’s Roberto Reyes left hooked Azamat Umarzoda to sleep and left referee Ray Corona to count him out at 2:45 of the first round of a junior middleweight clash between fighters making their pro debut.
