Boxing Video: An Interview with WBO junior lightweight champ Mike Anchondo
Record: 25-0 (18 knockouts)
Trainer: Buddy McGirt, Elite Boxing Gym, Vero Beach, Fla.
The Skinny: Makes first defense of his title April 8 against Jorge Barrios. Just recently began training with McGirt and the former two-time champ is now his full-time trainer. Most impressive victories thus far are a decision over former champ Goyo Vargas and a TKO of veteran contender and title challenger Roque Cassiani. Won the title against Julio Pablo Chacon, a former featherweight champ who made two succesful defenses.
What's next: This kid is a star in waiting. McGirt says he has all the tools to clean out the 130-pound ranks – and he's called out the top fighters in and around his weight – Barrera, Morales and Pacquiao. He can box and punch with both hands. Perhaps more importantly, he has a great personality and wants to promote himself and the sport of boxing.
