Miguel Cotto's Public Workout in the Bronx this Saturday
NEW YORK, NY (June 2, 2005) –“Cotto's New York Adventure” begins this Saturday, June 4, with a public workout at an outdoor ring located at 152nd Street (between Jackson & Tinton Avenues) in the Bronx at 3:00 PM/ET.
Undefeated WBO junior welterweight champion MIGUEL COTTO (23-0 19 KOs) from Puerto Rico, who is in his final week of training, makes his Madison Square Garden debuton Saturday June 11, defending his title against 2000 Olympic gold medalist MUHAMMAD ABDULLAEV (15-1 12 KOs) from Uzbekistan. The Bronx public workout is part of the 152nd Street Festival attended by more than 10,000 people annually. As a special treat to his fans, Cotto will distribute “fight” headbands souvenirs to the first lucky 500 people to watch his training ringside.
Cotto is looking to exact revenge on Abdullaev, the last man to defeat him, at the 2000 Olympics. Abdullaev is out to prove that their 2000 bout is his blueprint for winning the world title while ruining Cotto’s Madison Square Garden debut.
Cotto-Abdullaev, along with the co-feature, Joel Casamayor vs. “Kid Diamond” in a 12-round WBA-sanctioned lightweight title elimination bout, will be televised live on HBO's “Boxing After Dark,” beginning at 10 PM/ET (delayed on the west coast). This marks the first time in its nine year history that “Boxing After Dark” has ever played the big arena at Madison Square Garden, a true testament to the popularity and drawing power of Cotto.
