Boxing News: Sumya Anani on ESPN’s Tuesday Night Fights
Sumya Anani will be Teddy Atlas' guest on ESPN's Tuesday Night Fights on August 2. Anani stunned the female boxing world in 1998 with a decision win over an in-her-prime Christy Martin. HBO’s Harold Lederman described the result as “absolutely one of the most amazing fights I ever saw! Christy tried everything, but couldn't stop Sumya.”
Christy went to the hospital after the fight, and consequently never wanted a rematch. Sumya went on to win four world titles. She is ranked number one at 147 lbs. by Boxrec. She also holds the same ranking at 140 by the WBC, WBAN, IFBA and IWBF. Anani is currently the IBA welterweight champion and the current WIBA 140 lb. champ. In recent years she has been voted The Ring magazine’s pound-for-pound best female fighter. She has also been awarded the WBAN's “most avoided fighter” prize.
