Power Puncher Lemieux Elevates Self Into Title Picture, Blasts Out Guerrero
In the lead-in to the main event, David Lemiuex of Canada took on Fernando Guerrero of Maryland on Showtime, from the Bell Center, and Lemieux upped his status immensely with a KO-craving effort.
He sent Guerrero to the mat in the first, second, and then in the third, he walloped Guerrero mercilessly. After the second knockdown in the third, the rug was pulled out from Guerrero, who may well have chin issues to the extent that he might re-think this vocation.
The winner said after, to Jim Gray, that he’d love the winner of Peter Quillin-Danny Jacobs.
The 25 year old Lem gave up some reach to the 27-year-old Guerrero, but was ten pounds heavier on fight night, a light heavyweight in a middleweight tussle.
In the first, the lefty G looked to move, keep that chin safe. But Lem buzzed him, and the Canuck pressed. Down went G, with 12 seconds to go, and he was up with a couple ticks left. The buzz shot was a left hook, a quick snapper, and the ref missed a first knock.
In the second, Lem came forward with eagerness, sending the message that he wanted to stop this affair. G got on the unicycle, and pedaled furiously, as the round ticked down. A nasty gash appeared on G’s right eye. He landed a left hand, but then ate a couple, and down he went again. A right hand was the discombobulator.
In the third, G tried to string together some offense, get L off rhythm. No luck… The left hooks and right upper sent G down, and he was bleeding too much, and too messed up to continue, after he had to take a knee before that, and let the doc check him out. The end was 1:56, for the record.
