Adrien Broner Says He’s Fighting Lamont Peterson
The world thinks that Adrien Broner will get past his next foe, Emmanuel Taylor, so you can understand putting that cart before the horse, and getting their salivary glands juiced up at the thought of an Adrien Broner-Lamont Peterson fight.
This pairing didn’t pop up out of nowhere; Broner’s posted this on his Instagram on Monday afternoon.
“I Just spoke with Al Haymon I got a new opponent and new fight date @kingpete29 for the IBF junior welterweight championship October 18th at the Barclays Center in New York!”
Sounds great, right? Peterson holds the IBF welterweight title, which he defended in a wipeout win over Edgar Santana on Showtime’s Waterloo card, August 16. The 30-year-old DC based boxer holds a 33-2-1 record. His rep has been restored a li’l bit after his TKO3 loss at the hands of Lucas Matthysse in March 2013, with wins over Dierry Jean and Santana, and the interest in a Broner-Peterson bout would be much zestier than the buzz scene ahead of Broner-Carlos Molina, featured on the May Mayweather promotion, and the forthcoming scrap in Cinci against Taylor, an 18-2 Marylander who lost to Chris Algieri before rebounding with an eliminator win against Karim Mayfield on July 18.
I’m in!
Or I’m not…
Turns out Broner was just joshing. “They were just playing,” Broner’s trainer, Mike Stafford, told me.
Broner and Peterson get along, and don’t crave getting it on, it turns out.
As for this Taylor, how good is he, Coach Mike? “We’ll see Sept. 6,” he told me. “I know Adrien is better.”
Broner has been stellar in camp, the tutor said, and he’s not too concerned if Taylor is maybe a better athlete, and has faster hands than the guy Broner fought in May, Molina. “It don’t matter,” he said. “He’s not as smart as Molina is. He doesn’t know how to survive.”
Translation: we should get a better Broner than we saw against Molina, a guy who the 2013 Next Big Thing should have dispatched with flair and fury.
Regarding some other guys around the 140 pound plus sphere, what did he think of that Kell Brook-Shawn Porter fight? “Porter couldn’t make the adjustment,” said Stafford, “slipping a one-two.”
What say you fight fans? Supposing Broner handles Taylor Sept. 6, what should he do next, if indeed he isn’t fated to compete against Peterson….
