Regarding the Danny Garcia-Viktor Postol Talks….

It’s looking like Danny Garcia is going to bounce back after a gimme outing against Rod Salka to defend his WBC 140 crown against an A grade foe, one Viktor Postol. Or, is it looking like that? The specifics of that clash haven’t been set forth, but here is the release the WBC sent out on Saturday:

The WBC is very happy to announce the cancellation of the purse bid for the fight between WBC/WBA super lightweight world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia of the United States and WBC mandatory challenger Viktor Postol of Ukraine. Both parties have reached an agreement, the specific details of which will be announced in the near future.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman said, “I am extremely satisfied with the good faith agreement reached by the parties involved which will generate very good opportunities for the fighters, which is the top priority for all of us involved in this great sport.”

So, what does this curiously worded release really indicate? Props to fightwriter Cliff Rold for sniffing out the ambiguity, which he noted on his Twitter….I reached out to Postol’s manager, Vadim Kornilov. He clarified for us:

“There is a step aside agreement that we have almost finalized,” he told me. “Postol and Garcia will both get options to take other fights in the next four months, and then Postol will again be in the mandatory position to fight the WBC champion, within 60 or 90 days after (Garcia’s next bout.)”

Wait…step aside money paid from Team Garcia to Team Postol, so Garcia will get an allowance to bypass Postol? “Yes,” said Kornilov. And do you think Garcia will EVER fight Postol? “I doubt it,” he stated.

Any idea what Garcia is planning for his next? “I don’t know who he wants,” Kornilov continued. “We will look for an opponent for Postol now.”

Postol is a 26-0 Ukrianian, with average pop, with just 11 Kos, but above average ring acumen.
