About Adonis Stevenson And His RING Belt…
The sanctioning bodies get flak galore for sometimes being fast and loose with their regulations.
But, looking on the bright side, at least they HAVE rules and regulations, right?
Sometimes it’s up to us to remind them of that built-in structure, which can serve to, sometimes, force powers that be that might not want to capitulate to reason to do so…
In that context, I’m right now thinking about that Sergey Kovalev vs. Adonis Stevenson fight which in a more perfect world would have already have happened. It hasn’t happened, and why that is depends on who you ask…
But looking forward, and working to make it soon, makes good sense, because if we get stuck on past tense happenings, we can get caught in that quagmire indefinitely.
Looking forward…
Kovalev holds the WBA, WBO and IBF 175 belts, Stevenson the WBC’s version, and also the RING version.
I am wondering if we point out some of the regulations that are already in effect, we can help push all parties to doing the right thing, and that’s having the two perceived best face off. Such as:
According to the RING rules, a champ can lose the RING belt if he does not schedule a fight with a top 5 contender for two years. The last top 5 guy that Adonis fought was, it looks like, Tavoris Cloud, in September of 2013. Bellew was No. 7, Fonfara was No. 8, Sukhotsky, Bika and Karpency, unranked. Thus, correct me if I’m wrong, shouldn’t Adonis be stripped of that RING belt? We don’t see Adonis-Kovalev being made this year, and by looking at the current RING ratings, it doesn’t seem bouts against any of those fellas are viable…so is stripping imminent?
Or, rather than doing that, what say we reach a compromise, and say, let him keep it…if he agrees to sign on and fight Kovalev.
All in all, I’m thinking that we should be encouraging the regulations that are in play to be followed, and push us in a direction of progress.
Thoughts, friends?
