2 Women’s Titles Decided Saturday – Sanchez, Silva Stop Opponents
The boxing calendar for March 18th and 19th was light on the men's side, but there were four high-level world title fights taking place on the women's side, two of which went down on Saturday night.
In Pergamino, Argentina Anahi Esther Sanchez ran her record to a perfect 13-0 with a sixth round stoppage of Areti Mastrodouka, who falls to 9-1. The win gives Sanchez the vacant IBF World Female Super Featherweight title. Mastrodouka, from Greece, appeared outclassed and the end came when her corner threw in the towel.
The match would appear to set up a showdown bwtween Sanchez and Finland´s Eva Wahlstroem (17-0-1), who successfully defended her WBC Super Featherweight title on Friday night when she defeated Dahiana Santana. Santana, from the Dominican Republic is now 35-8 and a former world champion herself. Santana is 8-2 in her last 10 fights, with the losses coming to Sanchez and Wahlstroem.
In Metepec, Mexico WBC World Female Light Flyweight Champion Ibeth Zamora Silva successfully defended her title against Japan´s Mari Ando.
in the typical spirit of the growing Mexico vs Japan rivalry, Ando fought Zamora hard and went out on her shield. Zamora was too much throughout the fight however, as the Mexican champion sought to show why she is the number one ranked Light Flyweight in the world. In the end, Ando did not have enough to hold off the champion and the stop came after roughly two minutes in round six.
Silva is 27 years old and this was the sixth defense of her WBC belt. She may now face Japan´s Naoko Shibata (14-3-1) as the match with Ando was considered a prelude to that showdown by some. If that fight does not materialize for her, there is a slew of Mexican talent in that weight class waiting to challenge her, led by Kenia Enriquez (15-1), Jessica Nery Plata (16-1), Sandra Robles (13-2) and Josselyn Arroyo Ruiz (18-0), all of who are under 23 years old.
