Brothers Joet and Jousce Gonzalez Top Friday GBP Card

Brothers Joet and Jousce Gonzalez – Downtown Los Angeles will be the target zone for a number of Southern California prospects as brothers Joet and Jousce Gonzalez headline the fight card on Friday at the Belasco Theater.

Joet Gonzalez (13-0, 6 KOs) meets Sergio Lopez (19-11-1, 12 KOs) in a featherweight co-main event. The Golden Boy Promotions fight card showcases a number of Southern California prospects being scooped up by the boxing company.

The fight card will be streamed on http://RingTVlive.com at 5 p.m. PST and can also be seen on Estrella TV beginning at 7 p.m.

For the last two years Golden Boy Promotions has been gathering up nearly every prospect in the Southwest region especially in the featherweight and super bantamweight divisions. Joet Gonzalez represents one of those sparkling prospects.

After a lengthy amateur career the older Gonzalez turned professional in 2012 and was ready to compete from his very first pro fight.

“It was in the OC Hangar,” said Gonzalez, 22, who lives in Glendora. “I remember it was pretty exciting. The people were pretty loud.”

Joet and his younger brother Jousce Gonzalez both started boxing at the same time. As youngsters, their father taught them the rudiments of the sweet science but it was while watching Oscar De La Hoya fight Fernando Vargas that the sport of boxing hooked them for good.

“That was it,” said Joet Gonzalez. “Right after that fight we went looking for a gym.”

That was in 2002. But when they went in search of a local gym they discovered Jousce was too young to be admitted. So they waited two more years.

Joet was 10 years old and Jousce was eight years old when they discovered a street corner gym smack in the middle of a suburban neighborhood in Azusa. It was the same gym that once saw former super lightweight champions Zack “Attack” Padilla and Rhonda Luna lace up gloves. The Gonzalez brothers and their talented sister Jajaira Gonzalez have been working out in the small house-like gym for many years while racking up amateur titles.

Joet and Jousce will both be on the same card on Friday. Just like old times.

“Our father told us not to lose our voice yelling,” said Jousce Gonzalez about rooting for each other when they fight on the same card. “He said it’s important to keep calm and not waste energy.”

Both brothers will have to remain composed once again. Before Joet enters the ring younger brother Jousce (1-0) will be fighting New Mexico veteran David Montes (0-3) in a super featherweight bout scheduled for four rounds.

“We don’t have the same fighting style,” said Jousce Gonzalez about his brother Joet. “But me and my brother are similar.”

Other bouts (Brothers Joet and Jousce Gonzalez)

Highland Park’s Carlos Morales (13-1-3) faces former Cuban amateur star Luis Franco (14-1-1) in the super featherweight co-main event. If you have ever seen Morales fight, it’s always a struggle but he always seems to win.

Morales, 26, did not win his first fight as a pro until his fifth bout. He lost his first fight then fought to three successive draws. Then he figured out how to win and has not lost since 2012. Morales is not blessed with lightning speed or tremendous power but he knows how to use what he has.

Franco, 34, who represented Cuba in the 2004 Olympics, is a slick fighter who has only one loss on his ledger. His age keeps him from attracting the big promoters and he’s facing another fighter like himself who simply knows how to win fights. It should be a chess match.

One interesting fighter finally making his pro debut will be Angel Bojado. The younger brother of famed East L.A. fighter Panchito Bojado has been slated to fight on a Golden Boy card for the past two years but something always happened. Hopefully this fight takes place. Bojado fights Noe Perez (2-2) in a super welterweight match. Like his brother, he is very talented and skilled.

Las Vegas boxer Francisco Esparza (3-0) faces Noe Perez (2-2) in a featherweight contest and will be accompanied by former world champion “El Feroz” Fernando Vargas inside the ring. It’s a four round bout.

In a super bantamweight contest Whittier’s Pablo Rubio (6-0) faces Modesto’s Michael Gaxiola (4-7). The fight is set for six rounds.
