Margarito vs Alvarez Results – The Centro de Convenciones in Rosarito, Mexico hosted a full night of boxing that was headlined by the “Mexican War” between 154 pounders Antonio Margarito and Ramon Alvarez.  The Azteca TV broadcast crew was joined by 147 lb WBO World champion Jessie Vargas, who will be facing Manny Pacquiao this coming November. “Canelo” Alvarez was in attendance, and the ring announcing duties were in the hands of Jimmy Lennon Jr.

The match has been getting a lot of attention for several reasons. Foremost, this marked the second fight of Margarito’s return from a close to five-year absence from the ring. The opponent, Ramon “El Inocente” Alvarez is the brother of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. An NABO 154-pound title was on the line.

Alvarez (23-4-1) has a good reputation in Mexico, but is unknown in the wider boxing world. At 30 years old, he  had eight years of youth on his side, and the thought was that a win for Alvarez would introduce him to a wider audience and retire Margarito. Canelo’s younger brother is more well known now, but Margarito will inevitably fight on after winning a split decision.

Alvarez came out determined to make a fight of it, and Margarito took a couple of rounds to get started. When he did, Margarito looked in better condition than he did in his return fight this past March. He showed very little ring rust as the fight moved into the deeper rounds. In round eight, Margarito scored a knockdown that saw a fatigued Alvarez fall to his knees. But Alvarez found a second wind and came on late.  In the 10th, he threw everything he had at Margarito, who was on his bicycle trying to maintain the distance.

One of the judges gave the fight to Alvarez. His tally was 95-94. But he was overruled by the other judges who each had it 97-92 for Margarito who improved his ledger to 40-8 (27).

Margarito vs Alvarez Results – Campa Shines

In the chief supporting bout, Hermosillo welterweight Pedro Campa improved to 22-0 (17) with a 7th round stoppage of Nicaragua’s David Bency (10-6-1). Bency was overmatched, but he came to fight and Campa found himself in a war. Bency was cut in the fifth round and by the sixth round he was showing his weariness. Though he never went down, he turned his back when Campa started out the seventh throwing bombs and the referee stepped in and stopped it.
