O2 Arena Quick Results – London’s behemoth O2 Arena hosted HBO Boxing’s middleweight “super-fight” on Saturday, September 10th as Gennady Golovkin faced Kell Brook.

The two men entered the ring to a complete light and sound show, and the enthusiastic British crowd took the pre-fight energy level through the ceiling. The fight started out with both men engaging in tentative exchanges with the tension palpable in the air, but before the first round was over the fight turned into a war.

Golovkin showed his skill by constantly coming forward and cutting off the ring. Brook answered well, on several occasions backing Golovkin off and bloodying GGG’s nose in round two. At the start of round four, Golovkin came out with more resolve and from there he landed heavy punches on Brook. Brook tried to answer, but Golovkin was getting through to the body and the head. Brook seemed to be checking his eye constantly – the Sky Sports broadcasting team speculated a broken eye socket – and his corner stood poised to throw in the towel about 20 seconds before tossing it in to stop Golovkin´s onslaught. Brook went out on his shield in this one, but Golovkin scores his twenty-third consecutive stoppage in grand fashion on hostile ground.

The co-feature saw IBF world bantamweight champion Lee Haskins (33-3) taking on former champion Stuart Hall (20-4-2) in an all British bout for an alphabet soup world title. Haskins was the smaller man, but he came out and banked early rounds with his skill and quickness. The second half of the fight saw the bigger, more plodding Hall slow Haskins down to his pace and land with more success. The two parried for twelve rounds with neither man going down nor landing any truly meaningful sequences. Heading to the judges you had the distinct feeling it could go either way and the judges returned scores of 115-113, 117-111 and 116-112 in favor of Haskins. The decision was received with boos.

O2 Arena Quick Results – More From The Undercard

In super middleweight action, undefeated WBC silver champion Callum Smith took on Hungary’s Norbert Nemesapati (21-3). Smith is considered the best of a quartet of boxing brothers that saw his older brother Paul fight earlier in the evening and also sees brother Liam facing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next week in the most important fight of his career.

Nemesapati proved to be gritty and tough and he had a game plan of attacking the body, but Smith is the #1 contender for the WBC world title for a reason, and he took his time breaking down the Hungarian. By the end of the sixth round, Smith hurt Nemesapati with a body shot and he landed a head shot as his opponent was taking a knee. The bell rang to signal the end of the round, but Nemesapati would not come out for round seven. Smith goes to 21-0 with 16 stoppages. He hopes to face WBC world champion Badou Jack in the very near future.

IBF world flyweight champion Joel Riel Casimero (22-3) of the Philippines faced 23-year-old Charlie Edwards (8-0) in what was his first title defense. Edwards flashed his talent, but he just did not have the experience to overcome Casimero.

Casimero came out pressuring, and he would use his right hand  throughout the fight to land on Edwards who showed he was very hit-able. Edwards put together a couple of better rounds in the fifth and six as Casimero may have been taking a breather. Casimero picked the pace back up again and by round 10, he snuck in a left  that sent Edwards to the canvas. Edwards got up, but Casimero was in hunter mode and the ref stopped the fight at the 1:57 mark of round 10 with Edwards eating punches along the ropes. A gallant effort for Edwards, who was bidding to become the youngest Englishman to win a world title, but he was not on Casimero’s level on this night.

The vacant BBBofC British 130-pound title is going home with Martin Joseph Ward as he outclassed Andy Townend from beginning to end. Ward was aggressive throughout the fight and he showed good boxing skills and by the eighth round the referee stepped in to save Townend from more punishment. The stop came at the 1:54 mark.

Light heavyweight Paul Smith, another of the fighting Smith brothers, fought Daniel Regi on the undercard in an eight round bout. Smith did not need the full eight rounds, dispatching Regi at the 2:16 mark of round five to improve to 38-6

Conor Benn is now 4-0 after stopping late sub Joe Ducker in the second round of their four round bout. Benn, who is 19 years old, is the son of former two weight class world titleholder Nigel Benn.
