Indio, California, Thursday April 12

Francisco Vargas TKO  6 Rod Salka, super featherweights

With a constant attack and a vast superiority in the action of the fight from beginning to end, Mexico’s “El Bandido” Vargas (25-1-2, 18 KOs) defeated Salka (24-5-0, 4 KOs) in six rounds after the American fighter (who managed to single-handedly insert the fight in the “Irony and Sarcasm” section of news cycles worldwide by wearing a design denoting a Trumpian wall on his trunks only to be crushed by a Mexican fighter) endured a knockdown and a severe beating that resulted in a swollen left eye, which prompted his corner to simply keep him on his stool at the beginning of the sixth episode. For the 33-year old Vargas, this was his second win after his frustrating stoppage loss in 11 rounds against his countryman Miguel Berchelt back on January 28 last year, when the winner, in a disputed bout, grabbed the WBC 130-pound crown held by Vargas. – J.J. Álvarez

The winner goes on to: After that defeat, and even after beating Stephen “Swifty” Smith in his comeback bout, Vargas has expressed a desire to have a rematch against Berchelt, with the goal of reconquering the belt now in the hands of the only man to have defeated him. The rematch could happen sometime this year.

Hurlingham, Argentina, Friday April 13

Daniela Bermudez UD 10 Marcela Acuña, IBF and WBO super bantamweight titles

In a heated fight, Bermudez (23-3-3, KO) defeated multiple champion Acuña (46-7-1, 19 KO) over ten intense rounds in a bout in which there were no “study rounds” as both combatants charged towards each other from the first bell. The veteran Acuña took the early rounds with her better boxing skills and by keeping a safe distance, but as soon as Bermudez started applying a more intense pressure from the fourth round on, Acuña seemed to have no answer for it, and became engulfed in a whirlwind of punches that lasted throughout the bout. The scorecards favored Bermudez by tallies of 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94, with the latter being the most accepted one among ringside observers, and all of them for the native of Rosario, now a champion in three divisions, adding this title to her super flyweight and bantamweight championships after failing to grab the minimum weight crown against Yesica Bopp. – Diego M. Morilla

In other results:

Brian Suárez (6-0-0, 6 KOs) KO 2 Jose Luis “Indio” Yana Guarachi (3-1-0, 3 KOs)

Brenda Karen Carabajal (14-4-1, 9 KOs) SD 10 Gloria “India” Yancaqueo (5-10-3, 2 KOs)

Minneapolis, Minn., Saturday April 14

Jamal James MD 10 Abel Ramos, welterweights

James (23-1, 10 KOs), a local welterweight contender, earned a hard-fought victory over Ramos (18-3-2, 13 KOs) in a Premier Boxing Champions card destined to serve as a showcase for a number of hot young prospects. The 6’2″ James (pictured on the right in the long white socks) made great use of his height and reach advantages, but had a rocky moment in the second round when a left hook by Ramos shook him momentarily. The rest of the bout was more advantageous to James in general, with a final onslaught by Ramos adding a little bit of uncertainty in the scorecards, which favored James by scores of 95-95 and 96-94 (twice).

In other results:

Edner Cherry (37-7-2, 19 KOs) UD 10 Dennis Galarza (16-3, 9 KOs), lightweights

Chris Colbert (8-0, 2 KOs) TKO 7 Austin Dulay (11-1, 8 KOs), lightweights

Sebastian Fondora (9-0, 5 KOs) TKO 5 Veshawn Owens (9-1, 9 KOs), junior middleweights

San Juan, Argentina, Saturday April 14

Ana María Lozano UD 10 María Cecilia Roman, IBF bantamweight title

After a scandal in their first bout, this time Venezuela’s “Manal” Lozano (14-8-1, 11 KOs) did not leave any doubts in her victory over the defending titlist in her backyard. Roman (12-4-1, 0 KOs) ended up losing her crown in this second defense, with scores of 98-92 (twice) and 99-91, a true reflection of what happened in the ring. The 32-year-old Lozano had been literally robbed in her first bout against Roman, when a clash of heads in the first round opened a gash on Roman, who then went down to the canvas in the second only to rise as the winner when referee Rodolfo Stela inexplicably disqualified Lozano in spite of not having declared the headbutt as intentional in the first episode. Justice, then, was restored this time. – J.J. Álvarez

Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Saturday April 14

Marcos Villasana Jr. TKO 9 Jose Felix Jr., vacant lightweight FECARBOX title

In front of a raucous crowd at the local Arena Oasis, Acapulco native Villasana Jr. (22-6-0, 13 KOs) gave a great display of boxing from the very beginning and all the way until referee Frank Gentile stopped the action in the ninth round. Honoring his illustrious DNA (his namesake father was once the WBC titleholder in the same category), Villasana Jr. crushed “Josesito” Félix Jr. (36-3-1, 28 KOs),25,  with his right hand all night long, sending him to the canvas in the fourth round for an extra measure of emphasis in his solid win. – J.J. Álvarez
