Add Amir Khan To Pac-Man Foe List
Manny Pacquiao will glove up again on June 28, and will take on WBC lightweight titleholder David Diaz at Mandalay Bay, in a card to be shown on HBO pay-per-view.
Pacquiao’s promoter, Bob Arum, was in New York on Wednesday afternoon to talk up his sterling weltwerweight card that takes place on Saturday, in Atlantic City.
In AC, Miguel Cotto meets Contender Alfonso Gomez, a plucky underdog (who shared some heavy-duty information with our Ron Borges a couple days ago, which Borges will share with us a little later, check back), and Antonio Margarito may or may not be looking past Kermit Cintron, a man whom he already beat in 2005, to a scrap with Cotto.
Arum has locked down Mandalay Bay for Pac Man (46-3-2), and he talked to TSS about what comes next for Pacquiao, should he get past the 31-year-old Illinois resident, the southpaw Diaz (34-1-1).
“Assuming Manny is successful, and he wants to stay at lightweight, then we’d look to Nate Campbell (IBF/WBO/WBA lightweight champ), Joel Casamayor (WBO interim lightweight champ) or Amir Khan (WBO Intercontinental lightweight champ and 2004 Olympic silver medalist from England),” Arum said.
That last name is a new one on the list of prospectives. Arum said he’s talked with Khan’s promoter, Frank Warren, about a scrap between the 17-0, 21-year-old Khan, and Pacquiao, the 29-year-old Filipino.
When I asked Arum if he didn’t think Pacquiao would be too experienced for Khan, he basically said, that’s Frank’s worry, not mine.
