TSS Prospect Watch: Aaron Garcia Is Back

Published

on

It was a night of boxing and rocking as former amateur standout Aaron Garcia scored a unanimous decision win over tough guy Arturo Valenzuela at The Swiss Park in Chula Vista on Thursday evening.

Bobby D. Promotions in association with SDFights.com and Top Shelf Promotions put on an action-filled outdoor show that included a musical performance by promoter Bobby DePhillippis and “The Sound Doctors” during intermission.

Featherweights Garcia and Valenzuela came out throwing fast and furious from the start. Garcia landed some great body shots that clearly bothered his opponent. More fast paced action in the second as both men pushed for inside position. Garcia seemed to have the clear edge but Valenzuela came back strong at the end of the round. Garcia’s excellent body work continued in the third round but his tough as nails opponent was getting in his own shots. Garcia’s accuracy came into play in the fourth as he landed to the body and head in repeated fashion. At this point, Garcia was having his way and seemed to be clearly ahead in the bout. The fifth and the sixth featured more action as Valenzuela refused to give in and fought hard until the very last second.

Ring announcer Benny Ricardo read the scores of 59-55, 60-54, 60-54 all for Garcia. With the win, Garcia, improves to 8-1, 1 KO. Valenzuela drops to 20-11, 17 KO’s.

Trainer Joel Diaz stated that he was happy with Garcia’s performance,  grading it a “B”. “We still have some work to do,” said Diaz. “I’m glad it went the distance so Aaron could get some much needed rounds against a tough guy like Valenzuela.”

“I felt a little rusty but I was happy with my performance,” said Garcia, who hadn’t fought in two years.

Bojorquez stops “Mayu” Garcia in one

Emilio Bojorquez of Navojoa, Sonora stopped Cesar “Mayu” Garcia in the first round after a volley of quick punches went unanswered. The stoppage came at 2:13 of the opening round. Bojorquez first dropped Garcia with a body shot and referee James Jen Kin started the count. The fight continued and Bojorquez stalked Garcia, who was in over his head against the former Mexican Olympian. Bojorquez, a solid super featherweight prospect, improves to 10-1, 8 KO’s. Garcia drops to 2-2, 1 KO.

Marin takes decision over Khil

Oscar Marin of Mexicali took on Evgeny Khil out of San Diego by way of Siberia, Russia. Both men came out aggressive from the start as they winged punches with some bad intentions. Khil suffered cuts due to an accidental head butt in the first round. Some nice exchanges ensued with both men landing their share. Round two was more fast paced action as both superfeatherweights obviously showed up to win.

Khil, who was technically superior, still struggled with the rugged Marin, who wouldn’t stop punching despite getting landed on repeatedly. Marin rushed Khil in the third and landed to the body nicely as the Russian employed his jab to keep him at a distance. The fourth was close as Marin attacked the body and Khil countered well. In the end it was Marin’s heart that pulled him through to the decision win. The judge’s scores were 39-37, 40-36 and 39-37 for Marin.

In other action:

Bernard Gray of Oakland defeated Lawrence “Meet Your Maker” Baker of San Diego via unanimous decision in a very good heavyweight clash. Scores were 39-37 all the way across. Gray improves to 2-2. Baker drops to 5-3-1.

Super flyweight Sergio Herrera of Oxnard California defeated Elton Dharry of San Pedro by way of Guyana. Excellent action in this well matched fight that saw Herrera utilize his speed and fluid foot movement to befuddle his opponent. The scores were 39-37 all across the board for Herrera.

Featherweight Jesse Adame of Guasave, Sinaloa won a majority decision over Frankie Gutierrez from San Bernardino. The scores were 39-37, 38-38, 40-36. Adame wins his pro debut as Gutierrez drops to 1-3-2.

At the fights: Former NABF welterweight champion Danny Perez, former world champion Terry Norris, former contender Tony “Bazooka” De Luca and female California flyweight champion Carly Batey.

Next card at Swiss Park is scheduled for June 26th.
