Amaris Quintana Wins Close One With Gloria Salas
SAN DIEGO-Forget the Hatfield and McCoy’s rivalry what about the Salas and Quintana wars.
San Diego boxer Amaris Quintana won for the third time against Desert Spring’s Gloria Salas (3-5-1) and once again it was bitter combat between the two 106-pounders at Four Points Sheraton Hotel on Friday.
Neither fighter needed to figure out the other so they battled like a pair of runaway chain saws with both shooting combinations, counters and surprising power. One more thing, both can take a punch.
Quintana fired three-punch combinations in a blur and Salas countered with some well-timed right hands in the first round. Each boxer was anxious to prove to the roaring crowd that female boxers don’t hold back and they didn’t.
Despite Quintana facing Salas twice before each fight has been different. This time proved to be different too.
“She had a better style and better boxing,” said Quintana (3-0-2) who lives nearby. “She hit me with a right hand that got me.”
Nose spilled profusely from round second on but Quintana didn’t seem to be bothered by the inability to breathe properly.
Quintana fired three-punch combinations liberally throughout the four round fight while Salas countered and fired back. All four rounds were very close.
The judges scored it 40-36 twice and 39-37 for Quintana. There were no knockdowns.
“I felt really good in there,” said Salas. “I felt I did enough to win.”
After three fights both girls are ready to test out the other girls in the junior flyweight division.
“I’m willing to go fight anywhere,” said Quintana. “ Anyone.”
