Casamayor Decisions Seda in Miami
It was a hot night in Miami as former super featherweight champion Joel Cassamayor won a 10 round decision against undefeated Daniel Seda in the Main Event at the American Airlines Arena.
Just coming off a controversial split decision loss to Diego Corrales in March, Cassamayor, now 31-2, started the opening round aggressively against the now 20-1 Puerto Rican. The Cuban southpaw Cassamayor had no problem controlling the first half of the fight with his sharp right jab and combinations to the body of Daniel Seda. At the end of a bad third round for Seda, his corner worked on a cut over his right eye caused by a head-butt from Cassamayor.
The fight almost seemed one-sided as Cassamayor dropped Seda in the fifth round for a standing eight count. Not 60 seconds later, though. Seda landed a crisp right hand that caught Cassamayor, landing him on the canvas. It looked like it could be the turning point in the fight for Daniel Seda. The undefeated Puerto Rican seemed to gain a sudden burst of confidence with the knockdown, throwing a higher percent of punches from that point on.
Seda stood his ground against the more seasoned Cassamayor, clearly taking control in the seventh round, doing all the things that earn a fighter points, showing his aggressiveness, ring generalship and a solid defense. Unfortunately for the undefeated Puerto Rican, it happened in the later rounds of the fight.
By the start of the ninth round, Cassamayor came out of his corner showing the aggression he started the fight with, trading punches with Seda and winning the final two rounds on my card.
At the closing bell the scoring seemed like it could have been close with the fifth round being scored a draw. The game Seda also could have pulled a few of the middle rounds in his favor.
With both fighters walking around the ring with their arms held up victoriously, the scorecards were read from Judges Peter Trematerra, Stu Winston, and Mark Streisand, all scoring the fight 98-92 in favor of Joel Cassamayor.
