Matthew Saad Muhammad still a knockout
Boxing Hall of Famer Matthew Saad Muhammad, a former light heavyweight World Champion, proved he's still a crowd pleaser as he highlighted the Retired Boxers Foundation 2nd annual “RBF Comedy Club Night” this past Saturday night at the Bananas Comedy Club in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey.
Delighting the near capacity crowd with his winsome charm and effervescent personality, Muhammad reminisced with the fight fans in attendance over his wars with Marvin Johnson, Yaqui Lopez and Dwight Muhammad Qawi. Saad Muhammad also posed for many pictures and gladly signed several Everlast boxing gloves for patrons willing to make a contribution to the Retired Boxers Foundation.
It was apparent by the reaction of the crowd that Matthew Saad Muhammad (the “Arturo Gatti of boxing” – years before Gatti), recently selected by HBO as one of Boxing's top ten most exciting fighters of all-time, hasn't lost his knack to put on a great show and thrill a crowd.
In addition to the Champ, Bananas club owner Harlan Jamison put on a fantastic show with three talented, and very funny, comedians. Jamison, a big boxing fan and “RBF” supporter, willingly offered his club as a way to contribute and assist the “RBF”.
Thanks go to Harlan Jamison and all the Bananas Comedy Club staff, Joe Guzman of Everlast, West New York PD, Scott Darling and, of course Matthew Saad Muhammad, for making this “RBF Comedy Club Night” special, and successful.
The RBF's initial Comedy Club Night – held last September – featured another great champion, Iran Barkley. As we always state: The Retired Boxers Foundation will NEVER ask for, or accept, a monetary contribution from any fighter – but, there is no reason why a fighter can't support this worthy, and much needed, cause with a little of their “time”.
Along with Barkley and Saad Muhammad, other fighters who have stepped up and supported the Retired Boxers Foundation include Micky Ward, Jose Rivera and Acelino Freitas: all Champions, in and out of the ring!
