Boxing News: Mark Breland to train Jorge Teron
NEW YORK (May 11, 2006) – Mark Breland, the former Olympic gold medalist, two-time world welterweight champion and New York Golden Gloves champion, has been signed as trainer for unbeaten three-time New York Golden Gloves titlist Jorge Teron, it was announced today by Teron’s manager Steven Heid.
Heid informed Gotham Boxing president Cedric Kushner, Teron’s promoter, that the deal with Breland was signed effective immediately, and he replaces Hector Roca in Teron’s corner.
Teron, a Puerto Rican lightweight prospect and a product of JFK High School, is unbeaten in the professional ranks with 10 victories, eight coming by way of knockout.
“I could not be anymore excited that Mark is training Jorge,” said Heid. “My job as a manager is to give Jorge the best opportunity to become a world champion. There is no better way for Jorge to become the best than to learn from the best.”
Said Teron: “It’s a great opportunity to be working with Mark. He was an Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time world champion. If you look up boxing in the dictionary, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a picture of Mark. What better person to teach a 6-foot lightweight how to fight than a 6-foot-2-inch welterweight?”
“I'm excited about working with Jorge,” said Breland. “He's a very talented fighter and keen to learn. We have a lot of similarities in our personalities. He does his talking in the ring. I really think I have a good one here.”
Cedric Kushner, Jorge's promoter said: “Wouldn't it be wonderful if Mark could guide Jorge to similar heights that he attained in his career, one former world champion training another. As Jorge's promoter that certainly has a nice ring to it.”
Brooklyn’s Breland captured Olympic gold in 1984, seized the welterweight championship in 1987, and then again in 1989. He retired in 1997 with a ring record of 35-3-1 with 27 KO’s as one of the most successful and popular fighters to come out of Brooklyn.
