Mosley Stops Vargas In Round 6
Mosley reestablishes bona fides in Vargas rematch
Four-time world champion Sugar Shane Mosley (43-4, 37 KOs) stopped Fernando Vargas (26-4, 22 KOs) with a sixth round TKO Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Mosley out-sped and out-punched Vargas for most of the fight and cut El Feroz over the right eye in the fifth. Mosley landed a perfect left hook that dropped Vargas to the canvas in the sixth and final round. The ref Kenny Bayless called a halt to the action at 2:38.
In undercard action, Daniel Ponce de Leon (29-1, 27 KOs) took less than a minute successfully defend his WBO junior featherweight title against Thailand’s Sod Looknongyangtoy (27-2, 10 KOs). Unlike their first fight a year ago, which de Leon won by decision, this time the WBO champ took it out of the judges’ hands; a straight left knocked the Thai down and out in the first.
Juan Diaz (29-0, 14 KOs) retained his WBA lightweight crown with a ninth round TKO of Randy Suico (24-2, 21 KOs). The fight was one-sided, Diaz took Suico to school, and referee Joe Cortez waved it off at 2:06.
