Boxing News: Duddy vs. Campas at the Garden
NEW YORK (August 22, 2006) – Ireland’s middleweight slugger John Duddy (17-0, 15 KO's) returns to the Big Apple spotlight when he faces the sternest test of his young career against former world champion, Mexico’s Yory Boy Campas (88-8, 72 KO’s), on Friday, September 29, in the Theater at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.
A press conference was held today at Jack Demsey’s on West 33rd Street in midtown Manhattan for the formal announcement by Irish Ropes and DRL Promotions. Irish Ropes was represented by Eddie McLoughlin and Jim Borzell, while the trio of Dan Wise, Luis De Cubas and the legendary Roberto Duran were the DRL triumvirate.
Duddy, favorite son of Derry, Ireland, and now an explosive New York fan favorite, looks to uncork his powerful punch again at the Mecca of Boxing before his ever-growing legion of fans.
Duddy has fought at MSG in his last two ring appearances, downing veteran Alfredo Cuevas in the seventh round in the arena on the Cotto-Malignaggi undercard on June 10, while scoring an opening round KO over Shelby Pudwill at a packed to the rafters Theater on March 16 in a pre-St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Duddy is on a collision course for a world title and Campas is the next hurdle.
Campas, the ageless wonder from Navajoa, Mexico, has recorded an incredible total of 88 triumphs with 72 coming by way of knockout during a career he began in 1987 at the age of 16. The former world champion defeated Raul Marquez on December 6, 1997 to win the IBF light middleweight champion. Yory Boy has faced such world titlists as Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas and Felix Trinidad, among others, during a storied career. With victories in his last two contests, he looks to return to past glory against young John Duddy.
Tickets are priced at $300, $250, $200, $150, $100, $75 and $50 and are available at the Garden Box Office, through TicketMaster by calling 212-307-7171, and online at www.ticketmaster.com and www.thegarden.com, or by calling Irish Ropes at 212-835-1582.Ropes at 212-835-1582.
