Winky Wright To Fight Ike Quartey
Winky Wright finally finds someone to fight
Winky Wright, the southpaw who is too good for his own or apparently anyone else’s good, has finally found someone able and willing to step in the ring with him to do battle.
After being stiff-armed by Jermain Taylor‘s promoter Lou DiBella, who is opting for an easy payday (underweight Kassim Ouma) for his marquee fighter after his last three disputed defenses, and told by Joe Calzaghe that it’s not yet time for the two of them to meet (take two aspirin and call us in ’07), Wright has signed to meet Ike “Bazooka” Quartey at the St. Pete Times Forum on December 2
Quartey lost his last bout to Vernon Forrest at the MSG Theater on August 5 in another example of wildly imprecise judging, but now has an opportunity to redeem himself, as though redemption were even necessary, against the Winkster.
Wright hasn’t fought in Florida in four years, so the bout against Quartey will be a homecoming of sorts. “Finally, Winky told the St. Pete Times, I get to come home.”
Fight fans in Florida not completely snookered by slugging for slugging’s sake should greet the great Winky Wright with open arms…
