Legends Collide: Roy Jones Vs. Tito Trinidad
Two legends have signed on to meet in the ring. Unfortunately, both are a several years beyond their prime but still, it will be interesting to see what goes down when Roy Jones meets Felix Trinidad in January.
The two legends were on course to collide in 2001, when both were at the top of the heap, but Bernard Hopkins wrecked that best case scenario.
After 9/11, Hopkins whacked out Trinidad. That KO put the then-unbeaten Puerto Rican off track, and he's showed only intermittent interest in the sport since then.
Don King is the promoter of record for the match between the 38-year-old Jones and the 34-year-old Trinidad. He's aiming to put the event in New York.
What weight will the match be at? Trinidad (42-2, 35 KOs), who has never fought above 160 pounds, will likely be contracted to weigh 170 or under for the scrap.
This is likely to favor Jones (51-4, 38 KOs), who has fought in the 175-pound division since 1996, and last fought on July 14 (UD 12 vs. Anthony Hanshaw) weighing 175 pounds. RJJ showed some glimpses of the movement and top tier hand speed that made him boxing's kingpin in the 90s.
Trinidad's last outing came on May 14, 2005, when he was schooled by Winky Wright (UD12 loss).
Cynics might believe that the styles won't make for an entertaining battle, foreseeing Jones dancing excessively, potshotting to steal rounds with sporadic flurries, as the flatter-footed Trinidad stalks him fruitlessly. What about it, readers, think this fight will kick off Boxing Year 2008 in fine fashion?
