Goossen Family Loses Matriarch

Published

on

Condolences to the Goossen family whose matriarch Anna May Goossen, 86, passed away on Monday Sept. 10.

A native Californian, Goossen was mother to eight sons and two daughters along with 34 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

“She loved boxing and loved going to the boxing after-parties,” said Dan Goossen, one of her sons and the president of Goossen-Tutor Promotions. “Like all Irish women she loved a good fight.”

For two years Mrs. Goossen worked with her son in the boxing industry. The family has a long history in the sport and with the local news industry.

“My grandfather was a former editor of the old Los Angeles Herald newspaper,” Goossen said on Wednesday. “My dad was a cop who dabbled in boxing. It was kind of in our blood.”

Mrs. Goossen was a regular at many of her son’s fight cards and was also a proponent of family closeness.

“Her whole thing was family and how everyone gets along,” said Dan Goossen.

She is survived by Gordon, Ellorie, Pat, Greg, Dan, Mike, Larry, Joe, Tom and Sandra.

Services will be held on Monday Sept. 17, at 5:30 p.m. in St. Francis de Sales Church located at 13370 Valleyheart Drive in Sherman Oaks.

Immediately after the services a dinner will be held for family and friends at Sisley Restaurant located at 15300 Ventura Blvd.

Jose Celaya in San Jose

Now at junior middleweight, Jose Celaya faces Steve Walker at the HP Pavilion in San Jose on Thursday Sept. 13. Celaya had been training in Big Bear with Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero and Shane Mosley.

The fight card is promoted by Goossen-Tutor Promotions.

Also on the fight card will be Jesus Rodriguez in an eight-round junior welterweight bout against New York’s Dario Esalas. Undefeated Eloy Perez, a junior lightweight, meets veteran Odi Rivera of Los Angeles who provides a good barometer for young hopefuls.

For tickets or information call (408) 261-3214.

Former champ Norwood back

Former featherweight champion Freddie Norwood (42-1-1), a Victorville resident for a short while, fights Johnnie Edwards (12-1-1) on Saturday Sept. 15 at the Northern Quest Casino in the state of Washington. Norwood had been out of action for about five years and recently returned to the ring. He lost the title to Derrick Gainer in 2000 and defeated current WBC junior lightweight titleholder Juan Manuel Marquez in 1999. He’s had four fights since returning to the ring in 2006 and is now a lightweight.

Also on the non-televised fight card will be Westminster’s Javier Mora (21-4-1) in a heavyweight bout against Marcellus Brown (25-16-1).

Arce vs. Rojas in Las Vegas

Tijuana’s popular Jorge Arce (46-4-1) faces Tomas Rojas (26-10) at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Sunday Sept. 16.

Arce was beaten by current WBC junior bantamweight titleholder Cristian Mijares and hopes to make another run at the junior bantamweight title. There are still a lot of fights out there for the hard-punching Arce including South-Central L.A.’s Jose Navarro, Martin Castillo and Fernando Montiel.

Also on the card will be female fighter Jackie Nava (14-2-2) of Tijuana facing Donna Biggers (19-5-1) of South Carolina. For tickets or information call (888) 977-6654. It won’t be televised.

Jauregui fights Mora for IBA title

Mexico’s Javier Jauregui (51-14-2), who’s been training with Coachella’s Julio Diaz, fights Adrian Mora (19-0-1) for the IBA welterweight title on Tuesday Sept. 18 at Table Mountain Casino in Friant, California. The fight card is promoted by Roy Englebrecht Promotions and will not be show on TV.

Jauregui’s trainer Rudy Castanon works out of the Capital Punishment Boxing Club in Mira Loma. For this fight they’ve been training in Coachella.

Mora comes from Thornton, Colorado.

Contender star in Carson

Alfonso Gomez (17-3-2), who recently knocked out Arturo Gatti in a junior welterweight bout last July 14, returns to face the extremely tough Ben Tackie (29-7-1) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on Oct. 16.

The former Contender climbed up the rankings with his impressive win over Gatti. Few gave Gomez a chance to beat the former world champion Gatti.

Gomez lives in Whittier, California and still fights under the Contender reality show auspices. In his last fight he was trained by Pepe Correira who is now a trainer in the third year Contender reality show.

Golden Boy Buys Ring Magazine

The oldest and most prestigious boxing publication Ring Magazine, “the Bible of Boxing,” was purchased along with several other fighting publications by Sports and Entertainment Publications, a subsidiary of Golden Boy Enterprises it was announced on Wednesday.

“We have a very skilled and capable team at The Ring, headed by publisher Stu Saks and editor-in-chief Nigel Collins, and I have all the confidence that these magazines will not only continue to prosper, but in fact, grow globally,” stated Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Enterprises. “These magazines will be held in an editorial trust where they

will be operating totally independent of any influence from me or others from the Golden Boy Companies as it relates to editorial direction or content.”

The other publications purchased from Kappa Publishing Group, that formerly owned Ring, were KO, World Boxing and Pro Wrestling Illustrated magazines.
