Mike Jones of Philly Targets Manny Pacquiao; Arum Says He'll Be On List in 2012
#1 RANKED MIKE JONES SAYS 'ULTIMATE GOAL' IS TO FIGHT PACQUIAO
Number one-ranked, undefeated welterweight contender Mike Jones of Philadelphia takes on Raul Munoz at the South Philly Arena on a Top Rank Live! fight card on Saturday night. While in the ring Jones says he will be thinking of what he calls his “ultimate goal,” taking on pound-for-pound king, Manny Pacquiao.
Fighting Pacquiao, Jones says, has been discussed with his co-managers Jimmy Williams, Doc Nowicki, trainer Vaughn Jackson and promoter J Russell Peltz.
Bob Arum said today “I am planning to put Mike Jones on a list for Manny to consider for 2012.”
Jones, 24-0, 18 KOs, grew up in Philadelphia. He is ranked WBO #1, WBA #2, IBF #3 and WBC #5 at welterweight. Jones is a NABA, NABO champion.
Peltz said “Mike is a very hard worker in the gym.” Jackson, chief trainer, said “defense wins games and championships and that is what we are trying to do – win a championship.”
Jones, a big, hard puncher, said “it doesn't take a devastating puncher to get knockouts. You just have to be accurate with your shots.
Jones vs. Munoz is scheduled for 10 rounds and will be televised live on FSN (10 pm eastern).
“Like Manny always says, my goal Saturday is to entertain the fans and that is what I plan to do,” Jones said.
