Ocegueda Beats Hernandez, Other Riverside Boxing & MMA Action

RIVERSIDE-Boxing and MMA returned to the downtown area of Riverside that is quickly becoming a breeding ground for prizefighting of both genres.

In the boxing portion it was Los Angeles gym versus Los Angeles gym as Fabian Ocegueda squeezed a decision after four rounds against Luis Hernandez in a junior welterweight flare up at the Riverside Convention Center.

Ocegueda tried to power through Hernandez but found that fighter ready with some body blasting shots to the solar plexus. Plan A went right out the window for Ocegueda who needed to find another way to land his power shots.

In round two Ocegueda picked his spots with a five-punch combination then moved out of range of Hernandez's counter punches. Another four-punch combination found its mark to end the frame. Hernandez walked back to his corner with a bloody nose.

Ocegueda opened up round three with another five-punch combination but midway Hernandez caught his opponent with a counter left hook that looked punishing. Back he went to his body as each blow sounded even louder than the next.

The fourth and final round was tough to score as both knew that everything was up for grabs. Left hooks and a chin checking uppercut by Ocegueda landed but Hernandez kept firing. After four rounds it seemed difficult to pick a winner. But two judges scored it 39-37 and a fourth 40-36 for Ocegueda.
“This fight I got a little more anxious,” said Ocegueda. “I take my hat off to him.”

In a junior middleweight contest San Diego's David Barragan and Los Angeles's Marquis Bruce fought to a majority draw after four rounds. Barragan took the first two rounds and Bruce took the last pair.

A junior lightweight clash between Buena Park's Roberto Rios and San Diego's Alex Artiaga ended in a knockout win for Rios. A counter left hook by Rios floored Artiaga early in round one. He beat the count but was met with a three-punch combination that sent Artiaga down to the canvas once and for all at 59 seconds of round one for a knockout win for Rios.

A middleweight bout ended suddenly in San Diego's Brady Reins favor when L.A.'s Victor Medina was unable to come out to fight after two rounds. Medina was seemingly winning but did not emerge from his corner at the end of round two. Reins win by technical knockout.

MMA

Winners for the MMA fights were: Ron Scolesdang by decision over Brandon Moreno; Justin Santistevan submitted Kenny Hutchinson; Steve Magadeno knocked out Richard Schiller; Saad Awad submitted Andy Morales.
