East L.A.’s Aron Martinez Wins; Sindy Amador Remains Undefeated

ONTARIO, CA.-Aron Martinez eked out a majority decision over Alberto Herrera in a close welterweight fight that went all eight rounds on Friday.

In an evenly matched fight between East L.A.’s hard charging Martinez (19-2-1, 4 Kos) and Riverside’s veteran boxer Herrera (8-9-1, 5 Kos), it came down to the judges at the Doubletree Hotel on the Thompson Boxing Promotions card.

Martinez started quickly and stunned Herrera with a left hook in the second round during a furious exchange of blows. But the Riverside boxer who has fought many of the top welterweights made adjustments. They proved significant.

Herrera used his jab and found the perfect distance to exchange with Martinez, who is never in an easy fight. After the fourth round the momentum shifted to the Riverside fighter with his quick combinations and movement from danger.

Every round was very close and neither fighter could separate from the other. Martinez landed some good left hooks on the inside, but Herrera’s jab made the fight very interesting from round four until the end.

Judge Fernando Villareal scored it 76-76, but judges David Denkin had it 77-75 and James Jen Kin 78-74 for Martinez.

Female brawl

Undefeated Sindy Amador (10-0, 1 Kos) out-brawled Adrienne Alegria (2-2-1) of Chino who landed the harder shots but not enough blows to offset the windmill style of the Riverside junior flyweight. Both fighters like to brawl and didn’t back up from the first round until the sixth and last round.

Amador likes to put her head down and wing punches and found herself cut from accidental head clashes. Referee Raul Caiz warned Amador for putting her head down. She would suffer several cuts by the time the fight ended.

Alegria landed her left hook almost at will in a fight that saw very few jabs. But Amador never paused from round one through six and all three judges gave her every round. Alegria fought well and was never overwhelmed, simply out-punched.

Other bouts

Danny Roman (5-1-1, 2 Kos) of LA remained the aggressor after four rounds with Mexico’s Francisco “El Bebe” Camacho (1-2) and won by decision. Roman was quick with his hands and with his feet and pounded Camacho every round. Despite his baby looks, Camacho hung in there until the end. All three judges gave every round to Roman.

Puerto Rico’s former amateur star Ken Alvarez (4-0-1, 3 Kos) was brought in for the crowd to take a look at. Commerce’s Joaquin “Chico” Alvarez (3-7-2, 2 Kos) came for the same reason and nearly stopped Alvarez with some vicious bombs. Alvarez tired in the third round but slipped into boxing mode to regain momentum in time to win a split decision after four rounds of a junior welterweight match. Alvarez scored a knockdown in the first round but was nearly dropped himself twice. The crowd loved it.

St. Louis featherweight Stephon Young (4-0-1, 2 Kos) used his amateur experience to out-box Nicaragua’s Missael Martinez (0-8) after four rounds of a featherweight match. The southpaw Young was faster and showed better defense against the constant charges of Martinez. All three judges scored it for Young.

Pomona’s Oscar Santana (3-1-1) and Riverside’s Aaron Acevedo (2-1-2) fought a back-and-forth war that ended in a draw after four rounds of a junior lightweight bout. Santana was the stronger puncher but Acevedo fired more. There were no knockdowns.
