Promoter DiBella Releases Hamer After Fighter Quits On Stool, Via Twitter!
NYC heavyweight Tor Hamer quit on his stool after round three of his fight in Macao against Andy Ruiz, on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Brandon Rios card, which ran Saturday night on HBO pay-per-view; and if that wasn't enough of a bummer, Hamer was given a pink slip by his promoter right after, via social media.
Hamer started out fine, landing a couple clean rights on the Cali-based boxer. But by the third, body shots had sapped Hamer (on the right, with Ruiz on left, in Chris Farina-Top Rank photo) and he went back to his corner, and told his trainer he was done. He'd done the same thing, staying on his stool after round four against Czar Glazkov on Dec. 22, 2012.
Hamer's promoter, Lou DiBella, was in no mood for rationalizing, or bringing up the fact that another heavyweight who fought in NY, Magomed Abdusalamov, is comatose after a Nov. 2 bout. “That is an embarrassment @TorHamer,” DiBella Tweeted. “Time to become a pilot. Sorry to the fans. That is not (DiBella Entertainment.)” He followed that with, “By the way, Tor, you are released.”
I followed up with Dibella, making sure this wasn't a jest, or an intern took over his Twitter, or he regretted his action. Was he serious? “Absolutely,” he said. “Did you really doubt it?” No, I admitted, I didn't in th least.
Hamer, age 30, has a 21-3 record. The Penn State grad turned pro in 2008.
