Williams, Browne, Ali, Dominguez Win In Early Barclays Bouts
In early action at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Sadam Ali got the better of Jesus Selig in a welter clash, scoring a TKO in round six, 22 seconds in. Selig was still feeling the pain from the round before, when he hit the deck. Ref Pete Santiago, himself a superlative amateur from NYC, didn’t take any chances, and halted it, to the crowd’s hooting, saving Selig from eating clean head shots.
Marcus Browne’s left hands were too much for 20-8 Kevin Engel, who didn’t have the defensive chops to slip or slide away from Browne. The end came at 3:00 of round one, as a buzzed Engel, on a knee, couldn’t beat the count. Browne is now 8-0, making Staten Island proud.
Juan Dominguez scored a win via UD8 over Camilo Perez in the opener. The Brooklyn feather is now 16-0, while Perez slips to 9-2.
Julian Williams met Orlando Lora, now 29-5-2, in a junior middleweight squareoff. The Philly fighter, coming in at 13-0-1, winged nasty left hooks and rights over the defense of the Mexican in the first. Lora was a sitting duck and a commissioner in his corner hopped up on the apron as he was eating clean shots in round two. Again, some in the crowd hooted, as they did when the ref halted the Ali-Selig contest. But we are living in the post Mago world in NYC boxing and I think it’s always better a tick too early than a tick too late.
