Hernandez Beats Hays in LA, On All Star Boxing Card

LOS ANGELES—Boxing returned to downtown L.A.’s most beautiful venue, where Jose Hernandez defeated John Hays by unanimous decision.

More than 800 fans attended the All Star Boxing Promotion fight card at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel to see prizefighting, despite a heavy load of NBA basketball playoffs taking place down the street. And also a major televised fight card was being shown across the nation. Fans still arrived on Saturday.

Lancaster’s Hernandez handed Hays his first defeat as a pro by using superior defense and counter-punching his way to victory. Although he never came close to hurting the taller Hays, he was able to land combinations.

Hays used a steady body attack to land blows from the second round on. But Hernandez made some adjustments and the wide-punching Hays refused to shorten his punches and thus lost the fight. One judge had to 60-54, the others scored 58-56 and 59-55 for Hernandez.

Adan Munguilla bull rushed his way to victory over Riverside’s Danny Ruiz in a four round fight. Although he landed few clean punches he was the aggressor and pushed Ruiz back into the ropes every single time. Ruiz’ only good round was the first round when he stopped East L.A.’s Munguilla with a stiff jab every time he tried to bull his way in. From the second round on Ruiz forgot about the jab and allowed Munguilla to continue his advances unimpeded. The judges scored the fight 40-36 and 39-37 twice for Munguilla. Both fighters will meet again next month in Montebello.

In a battle of heavyweights, Xavier Vickney was much too big and too strong for Lancaster’s Helaman Olguin in a four round contest. Vickney pounded away at the southpaw and though he might have hurt him several times, he just couldn’t put the finishing touch. Olguin was clever in slipping and jumping out of the way. San Francisco Bay’s Vickney was declared the winner by unanimous decision 40-36 twice and 39-37.

Tarvis Teague of La Habra scored a second round knockout of Diego Garibay, who was making his pro debut. Teague ducked under every punch from Garibay, then at 29 seconds into round two, he launched a quick three-punch combination that floored Garibay for the knockout.

Reggie Verduzco of Compton defeated Bryan True by technical knockout at 1:24 of round four when a punch or thumb caught him in the eye. He couldn’t continue so the fight was ruled a technical knockout at 1:24 of the fourth round. Up to that point it was a very close fight.
