Here Comes, Maybe, Jermain Taylor versus Floyd Mayweather Jr
WELL PLAYED, TAYLOR MAY’D ? – Forget about Manny Pacquiao as an opponent for Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2015 for now.
There’s a much better chance we’ll be seeing Mayweather against newly crowned middleweight titlist Jermain Taylor.
If Taylor’s apparently invaluable advisor Al Haymon was ever to be given a role in one of the Marvel superhero movies, it might be appropriate that he portray The Puppet Master, a powerful persona who mysteriously guides characters through various misadventures.
After Taylor’s victory over Sam Soliman, it appears Haymon has guided Taylor back toward the very top of boxing’s pay scale. The very top, of course, is a fight with Mayweather. That’s where fate, Haymon or a combination of the two has positioned Taylor.
Taylor now has enough selling points, with a belt in another division, to be considered the type of not too dangerous opponent that provides more pre-packaged glory for Mayweather’s legacy.
It would be considered a winnable fight for Mayweather, and with Taylor’s size and history he’d be given more of a chance than Money’s most recent opposition.
Seeing Mayweather – Taylor at the MGM Grand next Cinco de Mayo looks like a safer bet than planning on a fisticuffs fiesta with Canelo Alvarez as the headliner.
Mayweather wins a lopsided, highly defensive contest against Taylor if that fight indeed occurs. Then he’d have all the leverage he’d ever need for negotiations with Gennady Golovkin or Andre Ward.
Right now, the odds of Mayweather – Taylor actually happening are at least 50 – 50. If that sounds unlikely, remember what the odds of such a match were just a couple months ago.
Remember, this is boxing, not the real world.
