Lathan Helps Launch “Fight For Your Future”
I attended a press conference on Friday announcing an exciting new initiative spearheaded by the New York State Athletic Commision chairperson Melvina Lathan, one which will aid boxers in gaining entry into high education slots. I will furnish a detailed report shortly, but in the meantime, check out this release which touches on the ambitious endeavor:
THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, THE NEW YORK STATE ATHLETIC COMMISSION, USA BOXING METRO AND DAILY NEWS CHARITIES, INC. TO LAUNCH “FIGHT FOR YOUR FUTURE” PILOT PROGRAM FOR NEW YORK BOXERS ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2014 AT KINGSWAY GYM
On Friday, November 21, at 11:00am, the City University of New York (CUNY), in conjunction with the New York State Athletic Commission, USA Boxing Metro and Daily News Charities, Inc., announced the launch of the “Fight For Your Future” pilot program that will provide professional and amateur boxers in New York State educational opportunities in order to help them compete in today’s economic environment. The announcement took place at Kingsway Gym, located at 1 West 28th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues in Manhattan.
The initiative will allow participants the opportunity to continue their education by either obtaining a General Equivalency Diploma (GED), enrolling in a CUNY undergraduate or graduate program and to be awarded scholarships based on academic merit to help them graduate from a CUNY school. Through this exciting new program, which is the first of its kind in the country, boxers will now have educational opportunities available to them that are much like those afforded to athletes in other sports.
Among the attendees were:
Allan H. Dobrin, Executive Vice Chancellor & Chief Operating Officer, CUNY
* Melvina Lathan, Chairwoman, New York State Athletic Commission
* Yvonne Williams, USA Boxing Metro, President
* Brian Adams, NY Daily News, Promotion and Community Affairs Manager
