WALTERS IS OVER….Walters Over Weight, Has Two Hours To Get Down from 127.4
Scale fail alert.
Jamaican 126 champ Nicholas Walters was 127.4 at MSG on Friday afternoon (2:22 PM ET), 1.4 over the 126 limit, and he had two hours to make 126, if he so choose.
He tried to carve down, and went back to the scale after 4 PM. He was 127, and had nothing left to give. “I tried everything,” he explained.
Foe Miguel Marriaga, from Colombia, hit 125.2, so he can win the WBA crown if he beats The Axe Man Saturday night at the MSG Theater.
Walters hasn’t fought since October 2014, when he beat Nonito Donaire. Perhaps he enjoyed the time off too much, and crept up in weight.
Puerto Rican prospect Felix Verdejo was 133, and foe from Texas Ivan Najera was 131.4 for their lightweight tangle, so they are good to go.
First fight at MSG is 7 PM ET; HBO has the Verdejo and Walters fights screening, starting at 10 PM ET.
